Choir Mission Statement

"Providing quality choral experiences and educational opportunities to the community since 1968"

Welcome Dr. Edward Howell to the Lapeer County Concert Choir

Just heard from our Choir President - Garrett Starr

"Just wanted to let every know that we have a new director. It was a very tough decision because both of the candidates were extremely talented and both of them had a lot to offer. The board had a brief meeting on Monday and they voted to extend an offer to Dr. Howell.

I sent an email to Dr Howell letting him know of our decision and he has accepted the position. I know that with his experience that he will be able to take the choir to the next level."

May 22, 2016 - From Dr. Howell

Dear Choir Family,

I count it an honor and privilege to have been selected as your new music director. I have great expectations for the choir as we begin our musical journey together. I look forward to our first season together to building the foundation for a new choral sound. This first year endeavor will pay musical dividends as we look to the future in anticipation of the choir’s 50th anniversary season.

I need your assistance and energy with another important goal for our 49th season. I would like to double our men’s section from eight voices to sixteen voices. Let me challenge you to start thinking of men you know who enjoy singing and would be an asset to the choir. Send their names and contact information to me at eddiehowell@windstream.net . I will personally contact each of them. Today, I made contact with a prospective male singer for our choir.

Robert Shaw, considered America’s greatest and best known choral conductor, often faced a shortage of men’s voices while conducting the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Shaw, in preparation for recruiting men voices for the 1948 season, sent out 1,500 letters with 3,000 announcements, sent announcements to 7 newspapers, and sent out 90 posters. In the end he added 3 baritones and 2 tenors to the chorus and considered it well worth the effort. Let us rise to the challenge of searching out and enlisting those men voices for our choir.

As we begin our musical journey together as a choir family the hymn text of The Servant Song comes to mind.

We are pilgrims on the journey
We are brothers on the road
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load

I will weep when you are weeping
When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you
I will share your joy and sorrow
Till we’ve seen this journey through.
When we sing to God in heaven
We shall find such harmony
Born to all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony
