The Lapeer County Concert Choir

The Lapeer County Concert Choir has been performing since 1968, known for its performances of large sacred works such as Bach's "Magnificat", Handel's "Messiah", Rutter's "Requiem", and Mozart's "Regina Coeli".

As the choir moves toward its 51th year, the goal remains to promote the advancement of choral music, and reveal the healing power of voices united in song.

If you wish to join us, we rehearse on Monday nights in Lapeer at the Trinity Methodist Church.

The Majesty and Glory of Handel’s Messiah

The theme for our 2019 Fall Concert is derived from a musical setting of Psalm 8 by Tom Fettke.  This psalm is a reminder of God’s presence is in of all creation.  Taking this a step further, if it were not for God’s majesty and glory many of the great choral masterworks based on religious texts would have no basis for inspiration.   The LCCC will open the concert with Tom Fettke’s The Majesty and Glory of Your Name.

Bridging the gap between God’s majesty and glory was His promise to bring light to a world filled with darkness.  The light revealed through God’s Son, Jesus Christ, was spoken of by the Old Testament prophet Isaiah who referred to the Messiah as Wonderful, Counselor, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.  The fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy was brought to light in the birth of Jesus Christ.  To communicate this message the choir will sing Moses Hogan’s setting of Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King.

Handel’s Messiah, an oratorio, is the most performed of the choral masterworks.  Handel had a successful musical career writing Italian opera which would take him to England where he would compose, produce, promote, and lead the performance of his operas.  His involvement in every aspect of each opera’s preparation and performance was quite profitable yet very taxing on Handel’s health.  While in England Handel began to compose English oratorios which maintained the musical forms of opera but without the staging, costumes, and artwork.  Handel’s oratorios based upon stories of Old Testament heroes were written for the concert hall and very well received by English audiences.

At the age of 64 Handel would compose the oratorio Messiah as an Easter offering which premiered on April 17, 1742, in the Musick Hall of Dublin, Ireland.  At this time Dublin was one of the fastest growing and one of the most prosperous cities in Europe, a guarantee of a profitable and well received public performance.  Unique to this work was its lack of a storyline and the combination of both Old and New Testament scriptures to provide a reflection on the Messiah’s prophecy, redemption of mankind, and death.  The choir tonight will perform Part 1: Prophecy and Promise of the Redeeming Messiah from Handel’s Messiah.

The scriptures referred to Messiah as the Prince of Peace.  We  conclude our concert with a song written in “1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis as a powerful plea for peace by a man who had experienced the horrors of war.”  Our gift of peace to you is the song “Do You Hear What I Hear?”
